Ulysses Owens Jr. is a GRAMMY-winning jazz drummer, producer, and educator known for his innovative performances and contributions to jazz.

He has released eight albums, including "A New Beat," which topped jazz charts in 2024. Owens has authored several books on jazz drumming, developed music products, and created online educational courses.

He’s an educator at the Juilliard School and he’s here to help you get started playing jazz on the drums.

Week 1 - Foundations of Jazz Drumming

Learn foundational jazz patterns, starting with simple swing rhythms on the ride cymbal. Develop coordination with hands while playing along with your right hand.

Week 2 - Lock In The Swing

This week, you’ll start shaping the heart of the jazz feel, you’ll comp with the snare, lock into a quarter-note pulse, and develop a smooth swing groove.

Week 3 - Add the Bass Drum & Start the Conversation

Add bass drum comping to your swing groove, develop coordination between all four limbs, and start playing “conversation” patterns that lay the groundwork for interactive jazz drumming.

Week 4 - Play the Form

Put it all together. You’ll navigate jazz standards like the 12-bar blues, rhythm changes, and jazz ballads while using everything you've built so far to comp with confidence, shape the form, and sound like you're really playing the tune.
